Language
Each Monday morning we have News Time. The girls are encouraged
to talk about their experiences whilst the others sit and listen. This
adds to their vocabulary and boosts their confidence. Listening
to stories together is also a valuable time to extend vocabulary
through talking about the pictures or by retelling the story
as a group afterwards.
Writing
The girls begin with developing their pencil control and hand-eye
co-ordination through the use of tracing books. These are
used throughout the three terms in Nursery. We also use a variety
of activities to develop fine manipulative skills for example:
- Finger Painting
- Drawing in flour or sand.
- Free writing (where the child uses paper, pens, pencils
etc to practise emergent writing during free-play activities)
In
News Time, the girls begin by writing over the top of fluorescent
writing. Once this has been mastered, she will progress to
copying underneath a piece of writing. Finally, when she
is ready, she will go on to copy from a separate sheet. |

Phonics
In the Nursery we concentrate on the phonic sounds of each
letter of the alphabet for example, ‘a’ as in
apple, ‘i’ as in igloo. Activities take place
in small groups, using a variety of practical creative activities
to help the girl’s remember the sound and to practise
the shapes of each letter.
Reading
The girls are encouraged to look at books as often as possible.
There are planned story time sessions every day as well
as the opportunity to use stories to reinforce learning
in other areas. A book box is provided with a variety
of reading material for the girls to access at all times. There
are also hand and finger puppets to enable girls to act
out stories, and games and puzzles to encourage word development. A
library box is used every Friday for the girls to choose
a book to take home and share with members of their family. This
book is then returned and exchanged on the following Friday. |

Reading Schemes
The girls begin by using books without any words so they can
learn to interpret meanings from pictures instead of text. Use
of the Rigby Star and Longman schemes for reading gives
them the chance to experience different styles of story telling. Sequencing
and comprehension worksheets help to reinforce their understanding. Both
schemes are continued in the Reception Class.
French
The girls begin French lessons in the Senior Nursery class. Basic
vocabulary and phrases are learnt through songs, creative activities
and group games. Learning a new language at this stage
in development lays a firm foundation for their later years in
school.
