Job Vacancies Inspection Report


All girls have a core ICT lesson from Infant through to Form III. The aim is to give them both practical skills in using a computer and an understanding of the impact of technology on their lives.

ICT lessons are taught in dedicated ICT suites using desktop computers. ICT is also used regularly within the curriculum and class teachers have the opportunity to book out laptops for use in their classrooms. Girls are encouraged to use ICT whenever it is appropriate both at home and in school.

Certificates recognising ICT practical skills are given to pupils at the end of form III and in Form IV, the girls may opt to take the two year GCSE full course in this popular subject.

  • The course provides pupils with the opportunity to choose, use and design information and communication systems to carry out a range of tasks and to solve problems, making effective use of appropriate principles and techniques
  • Develop a broad and balanced experience of a range of information and communication systems.
  • Make use of a wide range of ICT applications confidently and effectively.
  • Learn to operate unfamiliar systems and acquire an understanding of their more advanced features.
  • Recognise the impact of new technologies on methods of working in the outside world, and on social, political, legal, ethical and moral issues and security needs for data which surround the increasing use of ICT.

Practical work

  • Coursework portfolio - approx 35 hrs. } 60%
  • Externally set timed practical task -- up to 5 hrs enabling }
    students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of
    ICT to solve a problem.
  • Key Skills IT External test - Level 2 1 hour - 20%

Terminal examination 1½hrs - 20%
A single question paper based upon an externally set context.

GCSE BUSINESS STUDIES

This is available to Form IV girls and is two year course.

  • This subject provides a foundation in business and technological education relevant to all pupils. Candidates will use ICT for their coursework using the internet to gather information and produce a word processed report to show results of investigations.
  • The course encourages a practical and student centred approach to learning, encouraging pupils to develop initiative, problem solving and decision making skills.

The syllabus consists of 5 Units of Work covering the following aspects:

Business and its Environment
Human Resources
Production
Marketing
Finance and Accounting.

Assessment:

Terminal Examination (75%) (2 hours)
The terminal examination paper will be based on an externally set context. The examination will test a candidate's knowledge of the full range of subject content of Business Studies related to the context. This context will be issued in the autumn term before the terminal examination as pre-reading in the form of a Research Brief. The Research Brief will also be reproduced in the terminal examination paper.

There will be five compulsory structured questions at the Higher tier. The Foundation tier will be a combination of a compulsory section of short answers and four compulsory structured questions. The stimulus material may take a variety of forms.

Coursework portfolio (25%)
Candidates will be required to produce a coursework portfolio which shows evidence of individual research. The portfolio will contain one holistic assignment of approximately 2500-3000 words which may focus on a particular unit of work or be synoptic in nature.
