GCSE Modern Languages, AQA Full Course
French, German and Spanish
All pupils in Year 10 must choose one or two of the three Languages: French, German or Spanish.
In our increasingly global environment, linguistically able girls will be encouraged to opt for two Languages. On mutual agreement, girls might be able
to take GCSE French in Year 10.
New specifications have been put into place for students being examined from June 2010 onwards. The subject content is now divided into four Units:
Unit 1: Listening (20%)
Unit 2: Reading (20%)
Unit 3: Speaking (30%)
Unit 4: Writing (30%)
They match the four assessment objectives, which are: understanding the spoken Language (Listening), communicating in speech (Speaking),
understanding written language (Reading) and communicating in writing (Writing). The emphasis is on communication and this is reflected in
the weighting of the 4 Units.
For Units 1 and 2, girls can be entered for either Foundation or Higher Tier. Responses consist of non-verbal responses or questions
and answers in English. Dictionaries are not allowed.
Unit 3 is marked internally and moderated. It consists of two prepared tasks: an interview and a conversation, lasting between 4 to 6
minutes each. There are four criteria for marking: communication, range of Language and accuracy, pronunciation and intonation and interaction and fluency.
Unit 4 is assessed externally and consists of two tasks. The girls will prepare for the final examination (60 minutes) in three stages:
General teaching and learning
Preparation of the two tasks under informal supervision
One hour writing under formal supervision
There are three criteria for marking, which are content, range of language and accuracy.
Differentiation for both Units 3 and 4 is by outcome and there is no tier. Girls have been familiarized with these types of procedure,
which is similar to the ones they have experienced with the FCSE French in Year 9.
The four Units are studied into four contexts:
Lifestyle (Health, relationships, choices)
Leisure (Free time, media, holiday)
Home and environment (Home, local area, environment)
Work and Education (School, college, future plans, current and future jobs)
