To increase girls’ body of knowledge of Mathematical concepts and numerical methods.
To offer a variety of approaches to teaching and to engage and motivate pupils and demand their active participation.
To set challenging targets with high expectations for all pupils.
To explore enrichment opportunities outside the curriculum to enhance pupils’ enjoyment of Mathematics.
|
|
Setting |
| Girls are organised into two sets throughout the Senior School based on ability in Years 7 to 9 and on examination entry and expectation in Years 10
and 11. We aim to keep the second sets small so that the girls in those sets can benefit from more individual teacher time. However, all girls should
feel comfortable within the set they are placed and movement between sets is reviewed on an individual basis whenever necessary. |
|
Curriculum |
| Years 7 to 9 |
| In Years 7 to 9, girls follow a Scheme of Work based on the Level UP Maths scheme by Heinemann. The National Curriculum levels at which the girls
work are determined by the book they study in their respective sets. Each textbook covers three NC levels and consecutive books overlap two levels
allowing for consolidation and extension of certain concepts and then the learning of new concepts. |

Years 10 & 11
In Years 10 and 11, all girls follow the Edexcel Modular GCSE (2MB01) course for Mathematics. Apart from some special cases, all girls will be entered
for the Higher syllabus with all girls aiming for Grade C or above.
In Year 10, girls in Set 1 also follow the Edexcel GCSE course for Statistics (2ST0) and are entered for the Higher syllabus. All girls have achieved
grade B or above in the past.

10 &11 | Aiming for:
A* or A in Maths
A*-B in Statistics | Aiming for:
A, B, C in Maths |

In Mathematics, the girls cover 3 units over the two years and use the Edexcel Mathematics Module B textbooks. The units are as follows: |
| Unit 1: Statistics and Probability. |
1. Statistics
2. Probability
3. Number
4. Algebra
5. Geometry and Measures |
|
This unit is worth 30% of the final GCSE and will be assessed in Year 10 through a 1 hour 15 minute calculator examination. |
| Unit 2: Number, Algebra, Geometry 1 |
1. Number
2. Algebra
3. Geometry
4. Measure
This unit is worth 30% of the final GCSE and will be assessed in Year 10 through a 1 hour 15 minute non-calculator examination. |
| Unit 3: Number, Algebra Geometry 2 |
1. Number
2. Algebra
3. Geometry
4. Measure
This unit is worth 40% of the final GCSE and will be assessed in Year 11 through a 1 hour 45 minute non-calculator examination. |
|
In Statistics, the course will be taught in Year 10 and consists of one examination ad one piece of controlled assessment. |
| The syllabus covers
Planning and data collection
Processing, representing and analysing data
Reasoning, interpreting and discussing results
Probability
Much of this is covered in the Mathematics syllabus meaning that the whole course can be completed with not much extra teaching time.
The examination is worth 75% of the final GCSE and will be a single two hour calculator paper.
The controlled assessment is worth 25% of the final GCSE and will be a single task chosen from a set of tasks provided by Edexcel. |
