The physical education department works towards providing a curriculum with the following long term aims:

  • A stimulating and rewarding experience of Physical Education,
  • A firm footing in a variety of activities that will enable them to participate actively for many years to come in adulthood,
  • A degree of understanding about the effects of exercise on the body that will encourage them to remain active and lead a healthy lifestyle,
  • An experience of taking part in teams and competitions amongst each other and against other schools,
  • An experience which demonstrates that physical activity is fun and enjoyable to be involved in,
  • A knowledge of local clubs, organisation and leisure facilities which will enable them to use and extend their skills and involvement further,
  • A valuable experience of physical activity contributing to the education of the whole person.

Key Stage 3

At key stage 3 the pupils have two 2 hour lessons. They study the following areas of activity:

  • Netball
  • Hockey
  • Dance
  • Educational Gymnastics
  • Trampolining
  • Athletics
  • Tennis
  • Rounders
  • Swimming
  • Football

Key Stage 4

At key stage 4 the department offers two GCSE examination courses:

  • GCSE Physical Education
  • GCSE Performing Arts: Dance
All pupils at key stage 4 will have a general physical education lesson. During this time the department aims to broaden the pupil’s outlook in relation to sport/activity. The pupils have an opportunity to take part in a selection of activities including: :

  • Aerobics
  • Circuit Training
  • Football
  • Rugby
  • Badminton
  • Table Tennis
  • Volleyball
  • Squash
  • Trampolining
The pupils may also choose to continue with sports studied in key stage 3.

Extra Curricular Activities

The physical education department offers a variety of extra curricular activities for the pupils including:

  • Netball
  • Tennis
  • Dance
  • Gymnastics
  • Volleyball
  • Rounders
  • Athletics
  • Badminton
  • Horse-riding
  • Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

Trips and Holidays

When possible the department aims to take pupils to experience international level sport and dance.

Ski holidays and Multi-activity holidays are regularly undertaken to offer pupils the opportunity to experience adventure learning.
