The aims of the department are to help the girls:
- To promote an enquiring, critical and
sympathetic approach to the study of religion, especially
in it’s individual and corporate expression in relation
to religious traditions.
- To be aware of religion as a unique
mode of thought and experiences by acquainting them with
material illustrating social and ethical dimensions.
- To recognise and appreciate the contribution
of patterns of belief and behaviour together with the challenging
and varied nature of religion leading to and understanding
of the ways this is reflected in experience, belief and
practice.
- An opportunity to examine, in depth,
the ritual, social and doctrinal dimensions of religion.
- To encourage the identification of
and exploration of questions about the meaning of life and
to consider such questions in relation to religious traditions.
- To evaluate, on the basis of evidence
and argument, issues of belief and practice arising from
the study of religion.
- With an opportunity to examine material
illustrating religious language and symbolism together with
the ritual dimension of religion.
- With the basic skills of finding biblical
references and a working knowledge of the Bible.
- With an opportunity to appreciate the
importance of Christian Festivals.
Brief Summary of the Topics in the Senior School:
Form I

Aim: To provide the pupils with an opportunity to examine the
ritual, phenomenal and doctrinal dimensions of religion.

Topics: Creation stories, myths and legends, faith and prayer, Doctor
Barnardo, Islam.
Form II

Aim: To provide the pupils with the opportunity to explore religion
as a unique mode of thought and awareness.
To provide pupils with an opportunity to study the lives of
19th & 20th century Christians.

Topics: The Monastaries, the Reformation, O.T. character (Daniel),
Christian denominations, Judaism.
Form III

Aim: To acquire knowledge and develop understanding of the beliefs,
values and traditions of Christianity.
To consider the influence and the beliefs, values and traditions
associated with one or more religions.

Topics: From the OCR short course in Religious Studies A (World
Religions) - pupils will study :
Mark's Gospel, the Nature of God, Jesus as Messiah, Jesus
as the Son of Man, the Holy Spirit, Jesus' teachings, Christianity -
festivals, fasts and special days, Places and forms of worship, Religion in the family.
Forms IV & V

Aim: For their GCSE course (OCR Examination Board Syllabus B
- Ethics and Philosophy) pupils will study:
a) Philosophy
b) Ethics and Christianity
